LA: Focusing on Design With A Conscience (Week 28)

The HOPE poster

Analyse his poster for the 2008 U.S. Presidential Election and give your opinion on the use of style and its efficacy. Also critique the use of pastiche and typography.
Write one page (about 350 words) on your opinion of this design and substantiate your answers with examples.

Analysis:

The OBAM HOPE poster was made by Frank Shepard Fairey for the 2008 U.S. Presidential Election, the artist wanted to contribute to OBAMAS campaign and made the poster to support Obama. Later the poster has become one of his most famous works. The word HOPE is written in bold caps letters and is a central part of the poster. The posters style is bold, provocative and political, much like the artist other works. It has only 3 colours in different shades, white red and blue, like the American flag. The portrait of Obama show him in a classical portrait pose “looking far into the future” like the famous White House portrait of former Democratic President John F. Kennedy.

The poster is also similar to a poster of another iconic figure in socialism, the poster VIA CHE! Made by Jim Fitzpatrick in 1968.

The style of the poster portrays Obama in the same position and look as these two other portraits of iconic figures, Obama then also become associated with these figures, he is now also and icon. The bold all caps typography of the word HOPE, sends a strong and simple signal of what the president candidate stands for, and that appeals to voters that is hoping for something – be it change, a brighter future and so on. The poster communicates trough the posture of Obama with his shoulders slightly up, that this is a person that understands your pain and need for hope. He is looking upward which also sends a message of possibilities, and moving forward, upward toward something. The use of pastiche gives the poster a touch of history, and its simplicity in colour an typography gives it a strong message, that is easy to understand. Obama + Hope + America (colours).

LA: Applying Philosophy to Design 1 (week 28)

  • Design an A4 poster for a humanitarian cause you feel passionate about. For example, creating awareness and a call for action against human trafficking. You must apply pastiche to your design. Use a style of propaganda used during the Modernism era and create your own, unique design in a contemporary context.
  • Start by creating at least 5 thumbnails for your design. These thumbnails should be handed in with your assignment.
  • Write a rationale or explanation for your poster of at least 350 words. Why it is necessary to create awareness of the humanitarian cause?
  • Give an explanation for your creative execution, mention the use of colour and graphics as well as typography.
  • Give examples of the designs you used as inspiration and why it is applicable to your design.

The Ocean

The humanitarian cause that I decided to make a poster for is the fight to reduce plastic waist in the ocean. I love the ocean, I love to look at it, I love the sound it makes, I love to swim in it, and I cant spend too much time away from it. The pollution of the worlds ocean is a disaster that is already happening, and to save the ocean and the life in it is crucial for our own and future generations survival. It is said and believed that life started in the ocean, and the massive amounts of  plastic waste that ends up in the ocean each year, or even each day, is destroying wildlife and food sources. Raising awareness on this issue is absolutely necessary to slow down the disaster that is already taking place. The consumers need to know that the bottles and other plastic waste that they use and trow everyday, is ending up in the ocean, and that they as consumers and voters can change that.
